National Strategy to Protect Critical Infrastructure

Intact infrastructure is the basis for a functional and profitable economy and its various sectors. In light of this the German Federal Government is attempting to counter dangers by working with enterprises to create guidelines for infrastructure security.

The "National Strategy to Protect Critical Infrastructure" covers the federal objectives and political strategical approach and is also included in the National Plan to Protect IT Infrastructure (NPSI) for the IT sector. It is the starting point to build on what has already been achieved and also looks to new challenges.

The following statistical data play an important role in tackling existing cases of damage and in minimizing the associated risks:

  • Prevention: recognize risks early, avoid serious disruptions or failures or minimize them
  • Reaction: minimize the effects of disruptions or failures as much as possible with crisis management and the use of back up plans
  • Sustainability: use ongoing up to date analysis of vulnerabilities and failures to improve protection standards
Even this crisis strategy cannot guarantee one hundred percent infrastructure protection. However it is a recommended state strategy to interact with the operative part of enterprises in a careful and safety conscious way and promote defense mechanisms.
